Peter Rollins is one of those people you either love or hate. But then again for me he is someone who has a sharp mind, able to communicate ideas that provoke you to think. Like this particular video that states that atheism is born out of theism. Because theism is the reference point of atheism. Without theism there would be no concept of god that an atheist would reject.
But the thing that bugs me with Rollins is that, he constantly emphasizes that God cannot be framed in a certain view or understanding. I agree inasmuch as that God is above our natural language to explain. We do not have good models to explain God (take the trinity for instance). All this is true. I agree with this.
But that’s not the whole truth. We have as Christians what we call the scripture which we call a book that reveals to us this God we know. Although clothed in finite and mortal language, it communicates to us what God has revealed about himself. It’s not something we come up with out of thin air. What we have are texts which God has used for the particular use to reveal who he is.
Although agreeing that God is above being exhaustively known, we know enough about him because he reveals what needs to be known.
