as we gather at the table,
to pass the bread and cup,
remind about jesus’ sacrifice,
and speak about his love,
confess about our failings,
the sins we hurt ourselves,
but forget about the thing that speaks a horizontal love.
with this bread,
that we all share,
a common need,
a place to stand,
and if we seek just personal assurance,
we disregard the love he bore for us to share.
as we gather at the table,
to pass the bread and cup,
to sing about God forgiveness,
that was purchased in his Son,
but more or less we stop just there,
if communion is only that,
and forget the implication to live out God’s eternal love.
with this cup,
speaks of our cleansing,
his precious blood,
a sacrificial bleeding,
and if we seek just personal assurance,
we disregard the love he bore for us to share.
Note: This particular piece was what I hummed while in the train last night. I wrote the first two stanzas in my hand-phone. Usually writing lyrics for a song, if you don’t find ways to remember the melody, it will be forever lost but the melody to this one is still there in my memory so that’s why I was able to write the final two stanzas today.
I always wanted to write on something on communion. Usually when reflecting on the communion, it tends to just revolve around piety, remembering what Jesus did on the Cross and renouncing sins before taking it. Rarely is the community aspect reflected. The very word communion actually implies community actually. So this poem, or song speaks about the community aspect of communion.
