One of my favorite stories when I was just a kid was “The Billy Goats Gruff.” I Googled it up and read it again trying to see what wisdom it might give a guy in his early 30’s. I didn’t really remember what I learned from it as a kid but I like the part about the Troll living under the bridge. I wasn’t so interested about the goats, but the Troll, that caught my attention.

Reading it now I see three things I’ve gained as the embedded lessons in the story. Here’s what I learned:

1. As long as you’re smart, and know how to talk your way out you’ll make it through. (Be a Compulsive liar: From the 1st and the 2nd Goat)

2. If you’re big and strong, use you strength, let your fist do the talking. (Life is a battlefield, brutality is the way to live: From the 3rd Goat)

3. Settle for less not more. (Living in mediocrity: From the Troll)

Which makes me wonder; “Why were these stories read to kids in the first place?”
